From the 1950s until the 1970s, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) was examined to assess behavioral and personality changes and remission of mental symptoms in various diseases. LSD has been used to treat anxiety, depression, psychosomatic illnesses, and addiction. Nevertheless, most of the studies were not conducted per modern standards, and it took several decades for renewed interest in LSD research and its therapeutic potential in psychiatry. LSD belongs to the pharmacological family known as "classical hallucinogens" or "psychedelics", with psilocybin and dimethyltryptamine (DMT) as a form of indolamine (Fuentes, Fonseca, Elices, Farré, & Torrens, 2020).
